Yangchan was on her way to the temple, or gompa, with her mother and sister to make an offering when I first met them. The Shey gompa houses the largest Buddha statue in Ladakh, the most remote state in India. Known as “Little Tibet,” Ladakh is actually more Tibetan than Tibet itself since it has not been subjected to the repressive domination of the Chinese government. Tibetan
