During my travels
in the developing world I have been continually shocked by the degree
of gender discrimination in the communities I visit. The rights articulated
in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights include the right to
education, the right to own property, and the right to have a voice
in community affairs. It was hard for me to ignore the fact that all
of these rights are compromised when it comes to women in the developing
world. It was about the time I was deciding
to create a project about gender discrimination that the organization
CARE contacted me and asked if I would consider
doing some photography for them. I had always known CARE
as a relief organization that sent ‘CARE
packages’ to disaster zones around the world. Valenda Campbell
the photo editor at CARE explained that CARE
now concentrated on development and that the cornerstone of their
work was the empowerment of women. It was just serendipity and timing
that brought us together to partner in the creation of
Women Empowered.
For 2 ½ years I visited dozens of CARE
projects that empower women in Africa, Asia and South America. I
came away with a deep respect for CARE’s
work and many inspirational stories from women who have broken through
barriers of convention and oppression to improve their own well-being
and the well-being of their communities. Women Empowered
contains the stories of 25 of these women, whose bravery and determination
speak to the universal themes of courage, empowerment, and human
rights.
