Sylvia and her sister had just made the difficult 10-hour trip from their
mountain home in Santa Catarina to bring their beaded wristbands to sell
at the Huichol Center for Cultural Survival. They turned in 12 wristbands
and picked up enough beads to keep them working several weeks more. The
previous month, their beadwork had appeared as accessories on top models
in Elle magazine. After I showed Silvia a Polaroid of herself, she couldn’t
