Helena’s younger sister died two years ago from a snakebite. As a consequence, Helena will cover her own body with mud two days a month for the rest of her life. This practice not only honors the deceased, but also insures the living that their relatives’ spirits will not get angry at them. When I expressed surprise that she would continue this practice forever, Helena reminded me that spirits are no different from us--they like to be remembered. Dani Tribe
